5 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT MICROBLADING

Microblading

Sure, you’ve likely heard of microblading (maybe even some of your friends have tried it), but do you really know what it is exactly or what the treatment entails? Here, we go through the ins and outs of the treatment that’s becoming wildly popular among cancer survivors and women alike.

Who Is Microblading For?

As we age, our brows can become thinner over time, especially if you were an overachiever on the plucking front. Add in chemo treatments and you’re likely finding your brows just don’t look like they once did. “Microblading is a way to achieve a full, glorious shape,” says Brittni Alexandra, licensed aesthetician and owner of B.Beautiful Studio in Toronto. “But don’t just trust just anyone for this treatment,” she says. Brittni recommends doing your research to find someone who is knowledgeable and experienced with cancer survivors. It’s also important to research the provider’s finished work and ensure their facility is licensed and has undergone health inspections.

How Does Microblading Work?

Think of it like a tattoo job. Microblading uses a manual “hand” method of permanent cosmetics for your eyebrows, which creates extremely fine, natural-looking hair strokes. Reputable establishments will require you to have a consultation so take that time to have your technician explain the entire procedure in detail, while addressing any questions or concerns you may have.

What Can I Expect During The Procedure?

Plan to be in your appointment for at least two hours, although the actual time could be even longer depending on your current brow shape and amount of hair. “The procedure itself can be a little uncomfortable, especially for those who are more sensitive to pain,” Brittni advises. Pigment is applied with a specific tool that has a row of several fine needles to create thin hair marks in the skin. The pigment is bladed just below the epidermis and the shallowest part of the dermis resulting in extremely natural results.

How Long Is The Healing Time?

“Aftercare is the most crucial component to the success of your results,” says Brittni. Be sure to follow your aftercare instructions for 14 days after your procedure to improve and prolong the results of your microblading session. You will want to avoid getting anything on your brows, including water, except for cleansing as directed. You also want to refrain from any water-related activities, hot tubs and saunas for at least 30 days post-procedure. Also, you may find that your eyebrows will scab or become slightly dry and itchy following your procedure, but DO NOT SCRATCH THEM. You may lightly “tap” them to alleviate any itch. Lastly, avoid using daily skincare products directly on your brows, especially acid or exfoliates, such as glycolic or retinol. A touch-up is typically included 6-10 weeks after your initial treatment.

What Results Can I Expect?

“At first, your brows will appear more bold than usual over the next few days,” she says. After your procedure, your brows may darken during the healing process. “This is totally normal and not an indicator of how your brows will heal,” says Brittni. Around one to weeks, some may notice flaking/shedding of the skin near the brow area. When the skin flakes off, many times the microblading strokes have disappeared, which is normal. This is because there is still a thick layer of protective skin creating a veil over the pigment. Once you go through a skin regrowth cycle (4-6 weeks) the pigment will typically reappear but will be about 30-50% lighter than it was immediately after the procedure.

Be sure to discuss any cosmetic treatment with your healthcare team before deciding on its safety or whether it’s right for you.
