5 Tips for Designing a Standout Resume

Personal branding is more important than ever but you don’t have to be a graphic designer to have a gorgeous resume.

5 tips for designing a standout resume:

1. Brand it. Create a simple logo/ wordmark with your name (or hire a designer friend to design one for you!). This can be as simple as using a bold font and your initials.

2. Keep it clean. Stick to one or two fonts that are professional and easy to read. Generally sans serifs will work best for headings, while serifs will work best for body copy.

3. Divide & conquer. Try dividing your content into columns. Not only does this look aesthetically pleasing and easier to read, it allows you to fit more on a page so you can aim for that elusive one-page resume.

4. Use colour. In industries where you can afford to take some risks, giving your resume a bold colour scheme lets you showcase your personality (but if you have more than 3 you’ve probably gone overboard!). Pick complimentary or tonal colours for a polished look. For more conservative industries, try an accent of grey.

5. Personalize it. For the super brave, or if you were asked to include a headshot with your resume, integrate a professional picture to give your resume that Linked-in profile vibe.
